Matthew Eguavoen est né en 1988 dans l’État d’Edo au Nigeria, il vit et travaille à Lagos. D’abord formé en génie civil à l’Université de Port Harcourt, il se tourne vers l’art au cours de sa dernière année d’études et développe en autodidacte une pratique picturale singulière.

Son travail, essentiellement figuratif, se concentre sur le portrait, qu’il réalise à l’huile, à l’acrylique, ainsi qu’au fusain et au graphite. À travers ses modèles, il explore les émotions et les récits individuels, tout en inscrivant son œuvre dans une réflexion plus large sur les réalités sociales, économiques et politiques du Nigeria.

Sensibilisé aux enjeux de santé mentale, Matthew Eguavoen met en lumière, dans ses œuvres, la manière dont celle-ci peut être négligée ou stigmatisée. Ses travaux figurent aujourd’hui dans des collections privées en Afrique de l’Ouest, aux États-Unis et en Europe.

Matthew Eguavoen was born in 1988 in Edo State, Nigeria; he lives and works in Lagos. Initially trained in civil engineering at the University of Port Harcourt, he turned to art during his final year of study and developed a distinctive pictorial practice as a self-taught artist.

His work, which is primarily figurative, focuses on portraiture, which he creates using oil, acrylic, charcoal and graphite. Through his subjects, he explores emotions and individual narratives, whilst situating his work within a broader reflection on the social, economic and political realities of Nigeria.

Sensitive to issues of mental health, Matthew Eguavoen highlights, in his works, the ways in which mental health can be neglected or stigmatised. His works are now held in private collections in West Africa, the United States and Europe.
