Avant son installation à Paris en 1986, Ma Desheng fut l'un des membres fondateurs du groupe Xingxing ("Les étoiles"), premier mouvement artistique dissident post-maoïste. Cette encre sur papier de 1991 témoigne du style et des sujets qu'il affectionne depuis le début des années 1980. Les traits de pinceau larges, le refus des règles académiques de composition, la stylisation du paysage et le nu féminin, aux connotations sexuelles évidentes, soulignent le souhait de Ma Desheng de renouveler l'usage traditionnel de la peinture à l'encre par une rupture technique et thématique.

Before settling in Paris in 1986, Ma Desheng was one of the founding members of the Xingxing (“The Stars”) group, the first post-Maoist dissident art movement. This ink-on-paper work from 1991 reflect the style and subjects he has favored since the early 1980s. The broad brushstrokes, the rejection of academic rules of composition, the stylization of the landscape, and the female nude—with its obvious sexual connotations—highlight Ma Desheng’s desire to renew the traditional use of ink painting through a technical and thematic break with convention.
