Abe Odedina, né en 1960 à Ibadan, est à la fois architecte et peintre autodidacte. Sa pratique picturale s’est développée à la suite de sa découverte des arts populaires dits magiques notamment au Brésil, avant de s’enrichir des traditions vaudou haïtiennes.

Peignant à l’acrylique sur contreplaqué, il élabore des compositions planes, affranchies des règles de perspective et de gravité, qui invitent à une lecture symbolique et mythique du monde. Son univers visuel, vibrant de couleurs et d’imaginaire, s’inscrit dans la continuité des peintures figuratives expressives visibles dans l’espace urbain, de Lagos à Salvador ou Port-au-Prince.

Abe Odedina, born in 1960 in Ibadan, is both an architect and a self-taught painter. His painting practice developed following his discovery of so-called “magical” folk arts, particularly in Brazil, before being enriched by Haitian voodoo traditions.

Painting with acrylics on plywood, he creates flat compositions, free from the rules of perspective and gravity, that invite a symbolic and mythical interpretation of the world. His visual universe, vibrant with color and imagination, is part of the tradition of expressive figurative paintings found in urban spaces, from Lagos to Salvador to Port-au-Prince.
