Kelley Walker utilise à la fois des techniques issues du Pop Art (comme le collage, la photographie et la sérigraphie) et des outils numériques contemporains pour interroger la circulation et la consommation des images.

Par le collage, l’emprunt, le déplacement et la juxtaposition, Kelley Walker observe la diffusion médiatique de l’image et explore son irréductible matérialité. Coulure de chocolat, parebrise éclaté, autocollant, caviardage : il y a dans l’œuvre de Kelley Walker la reconnaissance de gestes urbains et anonymes, collectifs et régressifs, qui sont autant d’actes d’insubordination aux messages imposés par les agencements mécanisés des médias.

Cette œuvre fait partie de la série Black Stars Press, qui superposent en sérigraphie des images similaires à celles dont Warhol a fait usage et des couches de chocolat.

"Le chocolat, c’est une matière organique très connotée. Il est soit noir, soit blanc, souligne le directeur du musée. Dans l’histoire de l’art contemporain, c’est aussi un matériau hautement périssable et impossible à conserver, celui qu’a notamment privilégié un artiste majeur comme Dieter Roth." précise Lionel Bovier lors se l'exposition de l'artiste Mamco de Genève.

Kelley Walker employs both techniques drawn from Pop Art (such as collage, photography, and screen printing) and contemporary digital tools to examine the circulation and consumption of images.

Through collage, appropriation, displacement, and juxtaposition, Kelley Walker observes the media dissemination of the image and explores its irreducible materiality. Dripping chocolate, a shattered windshield, a sticker, redaction: Kelley Walker’s work acknowledges urban and anonymous gestures—collective and regressive—that are acts of insubordination against the messages imposed by the mechanized structures of the media.

This work is part of the Black Stars Press series, which uses screen printing to superimpose images similar to those Warhol employed with layers of chocolate.

“Chocolate is an organic material with strong connotations. It is either black or white,” notes the museum director. “In the history of contemporary art, it is also a highly perishable material that is impossible to preserve—one that was notably favored by a major artist like Dieter Roth,” explains Lionel Bovier during the artist’s exhibition at the Mamco in Geneva.
