Thanks to the design of a more powerful single-cylinder internal combustion engine that was as reliable as its Daimler-Benz counterpart, De Dion-Bouton was able to claim the title of the world's largest automobile manufacturer in 1900. Developed a few years earlier by Mr Bouton, this engine was tested in 1895 on a tricycle which proved so successful (particularly in motor sport) that it was widely used by other manufacturers. The De Dion-Bouton tricycle was produced between 1897 and 1901/1902, undergoing several evolutions. This particular model is remarkable in so many ways, first of all because it was one of the first models produced with its engine stamped with the date 4.C.98 (1898) and also because it retained specific characteristics. Consequently, it still has its fork (thinner than examples produced from mid-1898 onwards), its axle without the housing and its wet carburettor. It is also fitted with the optional tank under the seat and a front brake. The engine is not seized but the left side of the handlebars is missing. Another exceptional characteristic is the fact that it was purchased new in Paris in 1898 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owners. It has never left the family and we uncovered it in their family home in the 16th district of Paris, where it has spent its entire existence! As a former flour merchant and later an annuitant, he was a friend of Gustave Eiffel (also his neighbour) and Prince Alexandre Napoleon... it doesn't take much to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of this era of creative abundance. This exceptional piece of history deserves a place of honour among the finest collections.
